Juni-shi and Chinese Zodiac

A good friend of mine asked me the differences between Juni-shi and Chinese Zodiac. Similar to ancient Chinese, Juni-shi is associated with the twelve animals and ten conditions in the lunar calendar.

The animals includes Ne(mouse), Ushi (bull), Tora (tiger), Usagi (rabbit), Tatsu (dragon), Mi (snake), Uma (horse), Hitsuji (sheep), Saru (monkey), Tori (rooster), Inu (dog), and Inoshishi (buffalo, in Chinese tradition is pig).Japanese Juni-shi is a modify version of Chinese Zodiac.

The ten conditions are namely: wood, fire, earth, metal, and water) and five other conditions which have less meaning today. The combination of twelve animal’s characters can ten conditions made 60-year-cycle.
